So What? I’m Still A Rock Star…

There are times when you just need to cop an attitude.  In my semi-sordid youth, I wanted to be a rock star, so copping an attitude was essential.  For various reasons, I didn’t get too far down the road to rock stardom [see my infamous post Why I’m Not Liv Tyler’s Mother], but copping an attitude has come in handy since.

There are just too damn many members of The Club.  Can’t seem to go anywhere these days without tripping over sistahs and brothuhs.  And then there are the subsets of The Club.  The Recurrence Club.  The Metastatic Club.  The New Members Club.  The I’m-Just-Sick-of-the-Whole-Bloody-Thing Club.  Feel free to add your own suggestions.  Me, I’m in that last club these days.

I have copious notes from the NBCC Conference that I need to process and make sense of and relate to you here.  But I’m not quite up to it right now.  I seem to have copped an attitude.  So, I’m taking a page from my youth.  When all else fails, there’s always rock-n-roll.

And so, once again, I have come up with a song, which I dedicate to all members of The Club.  It all sucks sometimes, but we can still rock on.

Doctors, Drugs and Money — The Amazon’s Remix

Doctors, Drugs & Money

by the Accidental Amazon, with love & attitude

I was gabbing with the waitress
The way I always do
Well, how was I to know
That she’s got breast cancer, too.

I was waiting for a phone call
‘Cause there was this little risk
That my liver, spine or lymph nodes
Had some metastatic bits, NO!

I am the innocent bystander
‘Cause somehow I got stuck
With another damn recurrence
And I’m down on my luck
And I’m down on my luck
And I’m down on my luck

Now I’ve run out of insurance
I’m desperate for a plan
Send doctors, drugs and money
The shit has hit the fan

Send doctors, drugs and money…

Send doctors, drugs and money…

I am the innocent bystander
‘Cause somehow I got stuck
With another damn recurrence
And I’m down on my luck
And I’m down on my luck
And I’m down on my luck

Thank you’s:
First, to P!nk, from whom I borrowed a lyric for the title of this blog.  Now, there’s a woman with attitude!!

Next, to the Wallflowers and Jordan Zevon, who did a rockin’ version of one of my fave Warren Zevon songs on the tribute album, Enjoy Every Sandwich.  I used their soundtrack.  Here they are performing it live: Lawyers, Guns & Money.

And, of course, to Warren Zevon himself, who died of mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer.  He wrote some of my favorite songs, including the one I borrowed. Somehow, I don’t think he’d mind.  This is a video of one of the last songs he wrote, Keep Me In Your Heart For A While.  We will, Warren.  Rock on, brothuh.

  1. As usual you say it as it is.. Attitude is something we develop with hard knocks. As my mum would say, don’t come off all hairy with me. I gave birth to you and don’t you forget it. Now we use attitude to survive the rough waves we surf to who knows where.

  2. Hi, Sarah! How are you? LOL on your mum. Mine used to say, ‘Don’t look at me in that tone of voice.’ Sometimes, you just need to vent. Loudly. There’s nothing quite like rock-n-roll for loud venting.

  3. I’d like you to sing your NBCC notes, please.

  4. LOL, Katie. I need a break. Patients at work in crisis, friends in crisis, I’m too burned out to write. Need a recharge, like Anna. But I’ll be back…

  5. Love it. Thanks for sharing this side of you with us.

  6. LMBO!!!! Keep on “a rockin on” Madam KAK :):) Miss you so much, but just LOVE reading how you’re doing:) Don’t hold back sistah…..say what you feel….LOLOL

  8. Get you! You look absolutely wonderful in this picture – great to learn about another side of you. We can get so caught up in the seriousness of it all so I loved reading this post – what a great reminder to get off the ride sometime and just be..well YOU in all your fabulousness!

You have a talent! I love this posting and your song. The photos of you are so awesome.

And I love Pink — she does have attitude, and I love it.
